Uganda to Centralize Teacher Training at UNITE, Universities to Exit

The Ministry of Education and Sports is set to implement a significant reform that will see universities cease their role in training teachers. This mandate will be consolidated under the Uganda Institute for Teacher Education (UNITE).
According to Dr. Dennis Mugimba, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Education, this strategic shift is outlined in the National Teacher Policy of 2019. The move aims to address inconsistencies observed in how various universities approach teacher training, which has led to divergent teaching methodologies among graduates.
The government believes that centralizing teacher education at UNITE will help standardize the curriculum and pedagogical approaches, ensuring that all newly qualified teachers are equipped with a uniform set of skills and knowledge.
This reform is expected to strengthen the teaching profession by fostering greater professionalism and ultimately improving the overall quality of education delivered in Ugandan schools. The policy aims to ensure that teacher training is not just theoretical but also practical and aligned with national educational objectives.
