US Media Outlets Boycott Trump Coverage Amidst White House Press Ban

In a significant display of solidarity, major US television networks have ceased their pooled coverage of President Donald Trump’s events. This action comes as a direct response to the White House barring CNN, Politico, and MS NOW from accessing the building.

The ban, announced by Trump on Friday, was attributed to his claims that these organizations were publishing “fiction or lies” about his administration. The outlets reported their reporters were denied entry on Saturday.

CNN, Politico, and MS NOW have collectively decided to pursue legal action, stating their aim is to “defend the principle that the government does not decide what the press reports.” This move signals a deep concern over potential government interference in journalistic activities.

In parallel, the White House launched its own streaming channel, “Trump TV,” offering a continuous feed of the president’s appearances. This development has raised further questions about the administration’s approach to media relations.

Other prominent US media outlets, including The New York Times and The Washington Post, have also indicated they will not participate in covering pooled events. Some, like the Times and Post, have specifically stated they will withhold still images from Trump’s events.

This collective boycott meant that no network television footage was available of Trump boarding Air Force One or arriving in New York for a UN general assembly engagement. Even a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new Marine One helipad on the White House South Lawn, streamed live, had inaudible comments from the president.

Despite the boycott, Trump later appeared on television following a meeting with the Mayor of New York, Zohran Mamdani. He commented on the boycott, noting, “they said they were going to boycott me, but they never boycott me, so I wasn’t very worried about that. Look at all that press.”

The pooled coverage system is designed to allow media organizations to share broadcast material, thereby reducing costs and logistical challenges when covering presidential events for the public.

Bryan Boughton, Fox News Washington bureau chief and involved in organizing White House media crews, informed the BBC via email that “effective today, the TV pool will not be covering designated as pool coverage” of Trump’s events, citing the White House’s prevention of CNN from fulfilling its pool duties. No replacement pool will be established.

The lawsuit filed by the three banned organizations in US District Court in Washington highlights that their credentials were “revoked without notice or process” due to objections to their reporting. They argue that such actions, if left unchecked, “threaten press freedom and the public’s right to independent journalism free from government interference.”
