Uganda’s tourism industry is undergoing a significant shift as artificial intelligence (AI) increasingly influences how travelers research destinations and make booking decisions. Industry leaders gathered at the World Tourism Day 2024 conference in Kampala to discuss this digital transformation, emphasizing the need for Uganda to strengthen its online presence to be discoverable on AI-powered platforms.

Arthur Lwamafa from the Uganda Tourism Board (UTB) highlighted that the traveler’s journey has evolved from simple searches to direct interactions with AI. “Destination marketing is moving from simply being visible on search engines to becoming discoverable and recommendable through artificial intelligence,” he stated. This means tourism businesses, from hotels to tour operators, must ensure their information is accurate, up-to-date, and structured to appear in AI-generated recommendations.

Lwamafa proposed the development of an AI-powered “Explore Uganda Travel Companion” to assist visitors in creating itineraries, finding verified businesses, and discovering experiences tailored to their interests and schedules. This initiative aims to leverage Uganda’s diverse tourism offerings, including wildlife, adventure, and cultural experiences, making them more accessible to potential visitors.

However, Natasha Agaba, also from UTB, cautioned that AI-generated information requires human oversight and verification, as AI is not always accurate. “AI is not always right. It is basically not always accurate, so it is something you have to question,” she advised. Simultaneously, Dennis Ntege of the Uganda Tourism Association stressed that while AI can enhance operations and market reach, it cannot replace the essential human element and authenticity that define the tourism experience.

The Ministry of Tourism is also exploring AI applications for conservation, visitor management, and promoting lesser-known destinations. Efforts are underway to ensure that smaller tourism businesses and community-based initiatives are not left behind in this digital transition, with programs focused on building digital skills among various stakeholders.

Ultimately, the growing influence of AI presents Uganda with the opportunity to integrate its tourism assets with better data and digital infrastructure, while preserving the genuine human interactions that attract visitors. As Lwamafa put it, “AI should not manufacture the Pearl of Africa. It should make the Pearl of Africa easier to discover.”
