Basajjabalaba disputes Shs140b BoU liability, claims Shs168.8b

Hassan Basajjabalaba, the chairman of Haba Group, has presented a counter-claim regarding a financial liability involving the Bank of Uganda (BoU). The Auditor General’s report indicated an unrecovered amount of Shs140.487 billion, which was reportedly guaranteed by the central bank. However, Basajjabalaba informed Parliament’s accountability committee that his group did not receive the complete sum.
Appearing before the Committee on Commissions, Statutory Authorities and State Enterprises (COSASE), Basajjabalaba contested the figures and the extent of the claimed liability. He stated that Haba Group’s total claim now amounts to Shs168.8 billion.
This divergence in figures highlights a protracted dispute between Haba Group and state institutions over financial obligations. The committee is seeking to clarify the exact financial standing and the disbursement of funds related to the transactions in question.
