Law Students Challenged to Uphold Equality at Moot Court Competition

Law students are being encouraged to prioritize equality, dignity, and access to justice as they prepare to enter the legal profession. This call to action came during the opening of the first-ever Equal Opportunities Commission National Discrimination and Access to Justice Inter-University Moot Court Competition.

Lady Justice Olive Kazaarwe Mukwaya, President of the International Association of Women Judges Uganda Chapter, stressed the importance of neutrality for future lawyers. She urged students to remain committed to their clients and causes, emphasizing their responsibility to promote peace and uphold the rule of law, while actively guarding against personal bias and discrimination in the administration of justice.

Anthony Asiimwe, Vice President of the Uganda Law Society Council, reminded the students that rights come with responsibilities. He highlighted the significant barrier that the cost of legal services presents to many Ugandans seeking justice, underscoring the need for lawyers who understand and can address the needs of ordinary people.

Jumah Waira, Head of the Legal Department at the Equal Opportunities Commission, spoke about the transformative power of education. He encouraged the participating students to take the competition seriously, viewing it as a vital opportunity to hone their legal skills, including research, advocacy, analysis, and drafting, and to prepare them for broader professional challenges.

The competition aims to deepen students’ understanding of discrimination, equality, and access to justice while fostering practical legal skills.
