Minister Kamuntu Warns of Leadership Transition Risks

Uganda may face significant challenges in its upcoming leadership transition, warns Internal Affairs Minister Ephraim Kamuntu. He highlighted the widening age gap within Parliament, noting that a majority of MPs are now under 45, with a considerably smaller cohort above 65.

Kamuntu, a veteran politician who participated in the 1979 war against Idi Amin, stressed the delicate nature of blending these different generations. He described the task of uniting leaders from diverse age groups as “tricky” and requiring “advanced wisdom” to prevent divisions and ensure a peaceful, orderly, and legal succession.

Drawing on Uganda’s history of political crises, including coups and wars, Kamuntu stated that such a background heightens the risk of conflict during sensitive periods. He urged leaders to “pray for these men (young leaders) because they have a great challenge.”

Speaking at the burial of the centenarian Eliab Nyambobo in Ntungamo District, Kamuntu also called for respect and appreciation for the older generation. He described them as patriotic individuals who made significant sacrifices, building the foundation upon which the current generation stands. Kamuntu encouraged Ugandans to view older people not as relics of the past, but as valuable sources of wisdom.

Nyambobo, who lived to 108, was remembered as a devoted family man, a custodian of traditions, and a strong proponent of education and church development. He is survived by a large extended family, reflecting a legacy of continuity and community building.
