Tragic Lightning Strike Claims Two Lives in Kasese

A sudden and severe thunderstorm in Kasese Municipality on Wednesday afternoon led to a tragic loss of life when lightning struck, killing two men.

The incident occurred around 3:30 PM in the Town Centre area, Central Division, as heavy rains prompted residents to seek shelter.

The victims, identified as Yeremia Baluku, a night watchman, and Isaac Kihara, a dobby, were reportedly taking cover under a tree situated near their workplace. This is where they typically iron clothes.

According to ASP Maate Elly, the spokesperson for Rwenzori East Police, the lightning bolt struck the tree while the two men were sheltering beneath it, resulting in their immediate deaths.

The incident was reported to Kasese Main Police Station shortly after by a local businessman. Police officers responded to the scene, documented the event, and recovered the bodies.

Postmortem examinations are to be conducted at Kasese Health Centre III mortuary as investigations into the circumstances surrounding the lightning strike continue.

This unfortunate event occurs at a time when Kasese is experiencing significant rainfall. Authorities have previously issued warnings to the public, advising caution during thunderstorms and urging against seeking shelter under trees or other exposed locations. The police also recommend the installation of lightning arresters to mitigate the risks associated with such severe weather phenomena.
