Uganda’s public debt has reached an all-time high, standing at Shs143.92 trillion (approximately $37.12 billion) by the close of June 2026. This figure represents a substantial increase from the Shs125.23 trillion ($32.30 billion) recorded in the same period the previous year.

The Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development released this data in its annual debt statistical bulletin and public debt portfolio analysis. The report details the growth in the nation’s borrowing.

While the rising debt figures may cause concern, it is important to acknowledge the role debt can play in national development. Strategic borrowing allows governments to fund crucial investments in infrastructure such as roads, schools, and hospitals. These investments are fundamental for fostering economic growth and improving the quality of life for citizens, ultimately contributing to poverty reduction efforts.

The exchange rate used for the conversion was approximately Shs3,877.39 to one US dollar.
