Ugandan Golfers Ready for Rwanda Open Challenge

Ugandan professional golfers have enjoyed a lucrative month, with Ronald Rugumayo dominating recent tournaments. He secured victories in the Johnnie Walker Uganda Professionals Open, the MTN Pro Tee, and the Pearl of Africa Series, accumulating winnings from a combined Shs250 million kitty.

Now, Rugumayo, along with eleven other Ugandan pros, will face a new challenge at the Rwanda Open in Kigali. This event marks Rwanda’s first-ever Sunshine Tour tournament and boasts a significant prize fund of $153,000 (approximately Shs604 million).

The 156-player field at the Kigali Golf Resort & Villas, designed by Gary Player, includes participants from Rwanda and numerous Sunshine Tour professionals. Many Ugandans gained entry through nominations from the Rwanda Golf Union.

For Rugumayo, this tournament is an opportunity to validate his recent success and gauge his form against international competition. Other Ugandan contenders, including US-based Willy Deus Kitata, David Kamulindwa, Phillip Kasozi, Abraham Ainamani, and Grace Kasango, will be aiming to make the cut and contend for top positions. The rest of the Ugandan contingent, comprising Abbey Bagalana, Denis Anguyo, Davis Kato, and Hussein Bagalana, are also focused on advancing to the final rounds.

The Rwanda Open is scheduled to take place from September 24-27 at the par-72 Kigali Golf Resort & Villas.
