Afrigo Band Co-founder Moses Matovu Dies After Kampala Attack

Moses Matovu, a pivotal figure in Uganda’s music scene and a co-founder of the legendary Afrigo Band, has tragically passed away. The 77-year-old musician died on Thursday morning at Kibuli Hospital after being attacked by unknown assailants in the Kibuli Market Zone B area of Makindye Division, Kampala.

According to police, Matovu was assaulted in the early hours of the morning as he reportedly headed to a mosque for his customary prayers. He was rushed to Kibuli Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. Witnesses and friends indicated that Matovu had stepped out of his vehicle when the attack occurred.

Investigators were on the scene, cordoning off the area and collecting evidence, including a concrete paver and bloodstains found near his car. While the exact circumstances of the attack remain under investigation, preliminary theories from locals suggested it might have stemmed from a domestic dispute, though authorities had not confirmed this by press time.

A woman identified as Rose was arrested at the scene and reportedly led police to her residence. Police spokesperson Racheal Kawala stated that a dedicated team was working to identify and apprehend all suspects involved.

Matovu was instrumental in the formation of Afrigo Band on August 31, 1975. The band has since become one of Uganda’s most enduring and influential live music groups. Matovu’s career, spanning nearly six decades, began in the 1960s with various bands before he co-established Afrigo. He was not only a leader but also a saxophonist, vocalist, and composer, leaving an indelible mark on the nation’s musical heritage.

He was born in Kampala on June 19, 1949, and was set to be laid to rest in Kyanja on September 25, 2026.
