Afrigo Band Legend Moses Matovu's Death Sparks Grief and Investigation

Uganda’s music fraternity is in mourning following the untimely death of Moses Matovu, a legendary figure of the Afrigo Band. Matovu, affectionately known as Papa Moi, passed away on Thursday after sustaining critical injuries from a confrontation in Kibuli, Kampala.

According to police, the 77-year-old musician was at the residence of a woman when he was allegedly confronted by another man. A physical altercation reportedly ensued, leading to injuries that proved fatal for Matovu. He was rushed to Kibuli Hospital but tragically succumbed to his wounds.

Authorities have apprehended the woman who was with Matovu and are actively seeking the male suspect involved in the incident. Police spokesperson Rachael Kawala stated that investigations are ongoing to ascertain the precise details surrounding the confrontation and Matovu’s subsequent death.

Just hours before the tragic event, Matovu had been seen in good spirits with his Afrigo Band colleagues at a farewell function for the outgoing CEO of the Petroleum Authority of Uganda. Photos from the event show him looking dapper, a stark contrast to the circumstances of his passing.

Matovu’s career spanned nearly six decades, beginning in 1967. He was instrumental in forming the iconic Afrigo Band in 1975, leading it for decades and influencing generations of musicians with his unique blend of Ugandan traditions and jazz influences. His passing marks the end of an era for Uganda’s live-band music scene.

Fellow musicians have expressed deep sorrow, remembering Matovu as a mentor and father figure. “We have lost a very important person in the music industry, a legend who we have all been taking as our mentor,” said musician Mesearch Ssemakula, emphasizing the profound impact of Matovu’s death on the entire Afrigo Band. Police continue their efforts to uncover the full story behind this tragic incident.
