Denis Onyango: Uganda Cranes' Enduring Goalkeeping Conundrum

For years, the question of who will eventually succeed Denis Onyango as Uganda Cranes’ number one goalkeeper has been a recurring debate. Yet, the veteran custodian, now in his late 30s, continues to defy expectations, holding firm to his position.

Several goalkeepers have been given opportunities to stake their claim, featuring in various matches and tournaments for the national team. However, none have managed to decisively dislodge Onyango from the starting lineup. This consistent reliance on Onyango highlights a perceived lack of a clear successor ready to take over the mantle.

Onyango’s continued presence is often attributed to his experience, leadership qualities, and proven track record on the continental stage. His commanding presence in goal and ability to make crucial saves have made him a vital asset for the Cranes. Despite the emergence of younger and potentially more agile keepers, the coaching staff have repeatedly opted for the seasoned campaigner.
