EAC Military Colleges Convene to Harmonize Training and Curricula

Military leaders from across the East African Community (EAC) have gathered in Uganda for a crucial two-day meeting aimed at standardizing military education. The forum brings together commandants and representatives from Senior Command and Staff Colleges with the objective of reviewing and harmonizing their training programs and curricula.

This initiative is a key component of the EAC Protocol on Cooperation in Defence Affairs and aligns with the region’s broader defence sector calendar. The meeting seeks to foster greater cooperation and professionalize military education across partner states.

Major General James Kinalwa, representing the Chief of Defence Forces of the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces, highlighted the importance of such exchanges. He emphasized that the gathering provides a platform for sharing experiences and strengthening professional military education to better prepare officers for evolving security landscapes.

The discussions are expected to cover curriculum development, instructional methods, research, leadership, and strategic studies. The overarching aim is to cultivate military leaders who are not only professional and ethical but also strategically adept, capable of responding to contemporary security threats.

Major General David Gonyi, Commandant of the Senior Command and Staff College, Kimaka, stressed the need for continuous relevance in military training. He urged participants to develop practical recommendations to enhance institutional performance, ensuring that training methodologies and content effectively address the complex operational environments faced by officers.

Brigadier General Matthew Gureme, Uganda’s Defence Liaison Officer to the EAC, noted that the harmonisation efforts extend beyond curricula to include staff and student exchanges. This alignment, he stated, will bolster common standards, mutual trust, and operational efficiency within the region’s military training institutions.

The meeting includes participants from EAC Partner States, Defence Attachés, Defence Liaison Officers, and representatives from the EAC Secretariat, underscoring the comprehensive nature of the collaborative effort.
