KCCA Breaks Ground on Shs32 Billion Ggaba Market Project

The Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) has officially launched the construction of a substantial Shs32 billion market located in Ggaba, Kampala. This ambitious project is set to create a modern trading environment designed to accommodate more than 1,000 vendors.
KCCA Executive Director, Ms. Sharifah Buzeki, highlighted that the new market will address the pressing shortage of trading space, particularly benefiting vendors who were affected by recent trade order exercises. The authority has undertaken a registration process for all vendors operating in Ggaba to ensure adherence to a “one stall, one vendor” policy, prioritizing those from the old market.
The Ggaba market facility is designed with a comprehensive array of features. It will include 143 stalls, 173 lock-up shops, 60 additional shops, 47 pitches, and 168 restaurant spaces. Furthermore, the market will be equipped with modern amenities such as cold rooms, a general store, a business hub, and a dedicated childcare space, offering significant support to female vendors with young children.
After a competitive bidding process where 13 companies expressed interest, Ambitious Construction Company Limited secured the contract. KCCA is encouraging community involvement in monitoring the construction to ensure quality and timely delivery.
Lord Mayor, Mr. Ronald Balimwezo, urged the contractor to adhere to the project timeline, while also advising KCCA to integrate an existing community toilet, constructed by GIZ, into the market’s design rather than leaving it unused. He stressed the importance of achieving “value for money” and avoiding project delays that escalate costs.
State Minister for Kampala, Mr. Kabuye Kyofatogabye, clarified that while vendors will have user rights, the ownership of the stalls will remain with KCCA. Fish vendors, like Ivan Mutebi, have expressed optimism, particularly welcoming the inclusion of cold rooms which are crucial for preserving their products, a significant improvement from current inadequate conditions.
Funded by the World Bank, the project is slated for completion within two years, followed by a one-year defects liability period.
