President Yoweri Museveni, addressing the 81st United Nations General Assembly through Vice President Jessica Alupo, has issued a strong call for the reform of the UN and the international financial architecture. He emphasized the need for the world body to “adapt to changing global realities” while upholding its core mission of preventing conflict, protecting human rights, and fostering development.

Speaking on the persistent threat of global conflict and prevailing uncertainty, Museveni stressed the importance of returning to the UN’s founding principles. He reaffirmed Uganda’s commitment to multilateralism and international cooperation in tackling cross-border challenges, supporting the UN’s pillars of peace, security, human rights, humanitarian affairs, and sustainable development.

A key demand articulated by President Museveni was for a more equitable and representative UN Security Council, specifically advocating for permanent African representation. This demand aligns with the African Union’s position, seeking to rectify historical imbalances within the powerful 15-member body.

Furthermore, Museveni expressed deep concern over the financial struggles of developing countries, which are hindering their ability to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. He noted that a significant portion of revenue in many nations is diverted to debt servicing, limiting investment in crucial infrastructure and social services, thereby slowing progress towards the 2030 Agenda.

The Ugandan leader also underscored the necessity of diplomatic solutions over military interventions for lasting peace. He highlighted Uganda’s ongoing role in promoting regional stability and its commitment to advancing the right to development through initiatives like the Non-Aligned Movement. Museveni concluded by asserting that continuous reform is vital for the UN to remain relevant and fulfill its foundational promises in a transformed world.
