NRM Supporters Acquitted of State House Trespass Charges

A group of eleven National Resistance Movement (NRM) supporters has been released from Luzira Prison after the state decided to drop criminal trespass charges against them. The supporters were apprehended on September 9, 2026, after returning to State House Nakasero.

Their arrest stemmed from an attempt to follow up on a petition they had previously delivered to President Yoweri Museveni. Although their initial visit to deliver the petition was reportedly accepted and stamped, the group returned the following day seeking feedback. When no response had been received, they were detained by security personnel and subsequently handed over to the police.

The prosecution had accused the group of remaining on the presidential premises with the intent to intimidate or annoy Special Forces Command (SFC) soldiers on duty. The accused individuals, who included a teacher, businesswoman, student, and former political aspirants, all denied the charges.

During their court appearance on Wednesday, state attorneys Ayubu Kamba and Allan Mucunguzi informed the Buganda Road Chief Magistrates’ court that the state would no longer pursue the case. Chief Magistrate Winnie Nankya Jatiko then dismissed the charges, leading to the immediate release of the eleven supporters.

This development brings an end to the legal proceedings that had seen the NRM supporters remanded for two weeks following their initial court appearance on September 9.
