Speaker Oboth Hails China's Crucial Role in Uganda's Development

Speaker of Parliament Jacob Marksons Oboth has expressed deep appreciation for the People’s Republic of China’s significant and long-standing support for Uganda’s development. Speaking at a reception in Kampala marking China’s 77th National Day and the arrival of the new Chinese Ambassador, H.E. Wu Guangrong, Oboth emphasized the strong bilateral relationship that spans over six decades.
“The gathering here itself is a reflection of the true kinship and shared bonds between our two nations,” Oboth stated, underscoring the enduring friendship established in 1962.
Oboth pointed to several key infrastructure projects as testaments to this successful partnership, including the Kampala-Entebbe Expressway, the Karuma and Isimba hydropower dams, and enhancements to Entebbe International Airport and the National Stadium. The Speaker also highlighted the positive impact of agricultural collaboration, citing projects like the Kibimba and Doho farms.
In the health sector, Oboth specifically commended the China-Uganda Friendship Hospital and the continuous service of Chinese medical teams in Uganda since 1983, crediting them with saving numerous lives. The reception also served to welcome the 26th Chinese Medical Team while bidding farewell to the 25th.
Ambassador Wu Guangrong echoed the sentiment, describing the China-Uganda relationship as a rapidly expanding comprehensive strategic partnership. He noted advancements in hydropower, oil exploration, agriculture, and trade. The Ambassador mentioned the crucial role of hydroelectric projects in powering Uganda’s industrialization and highlighted the recent naming of Uganda’s crude oil as “Pearl Sweet.” He also pointed to the success of Chinese hybrid rice technology in boosting agricultural yields and food security, as well as increased access for Ugandan products, including coffee, to the Chinese market.
The event was attended by various dignitaries, including State Ministers Haruna Kasolo, Grace Akifeza Ngabirano, and the Chairperson of the Uganda Human Rights Commission, Ms. Mariam Fauzat Wangadya.
