UCC Pushes for Market-Ready Innovations to Solve Ugandan Challenges

Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) Executive Director Nyombi Thembo has emphasized the critical need for research and innovation to yield tangible, market-ready solutions.

Speaking at the 10th National Conference on Communications (NCC 2026) at Makerere University, Thembo highlighted that research should extend beyond theoretical knowledge to create practical applications that can improve livelihoods and spur socio-economic development.

The conference’s theme, “Accelerating Market-Driven Research and Innovation for Uganda’s Development,” served as a direct appeal to researchers, government bodies, industry stakeholders, and young innovators to bridge the gap between discovery and practical implementation.

“Research cannot stop at generating knowledge; it must translate into practical, market-driven solutions that improve livelihoods, address local challenges, and drive socio-economic growth,” Thembo stated.

UCC is actively supporting initiatives aimed at nurturing innovation, particularly among the youth, through programs like the Secondary School ICT Club Competition. These efforts seek to provide young people with platforms to develop and showcase technology-based solutions.

The exhibitions at the conference also serve as a vital venue for innovators to present their work, connect with potential users, and engage with industry leaders. UCC is committed to strengthening the synergy between research and industrial development, exemplified by their recent engagement with Kiira Motors to link innovation with production.

As the sector’s regulator, UCC is dedicated to fostering an environment conducive to advancements in artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, telecommunications, and digital infrastructure. Thembo stressed that enhanced collaboration among universities, government, and the private sector is paramount for Uganda to build its capacity in developing and adapting technologies to meet local needs.

The conference brought together a diverse group of researchers, industry professionals, and emerging innovators to deliberate on the role of communication, technology, and research in advancing Uganda’s developmental agenda.
