Uganda Govt Endorses New Tooro King, Gazette Notice Forthcoming

The Ugandan government has officially affirmed that the selection of Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma as the new Omukama of Tooro followed all required traditional and legal processes.
State Minister for Gender and Culture, Mary Kuteesa Kamuli, announced the government’s stance, emphasizing that the Babiito Royal Clan, led by Omujwera Musuuga Charles Kamurasi, formally selected Prince Kijanangoma on September 9 at Karuziika Palace.
This selection was subsequently endorsed by the Tooro Kingdom’s Supreme Council (Rukurato Rw’Obukama Bwa Tooro) on September 15. Minister Kamuli stated that the necessary documentation, including clan resolutions, has been submitted to the ministry, which is now preparing the formal announcement in the Uganda Gazette as mandated by the Institution of Traditional or Cultural Leaders Act, 2011.
Prince Kijanangoma has officially assumed the title His Majesty Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I, Omukama w’Obukama Bwa Tooro. The government’s confirmation aligns with Article 246 of the Ugandan Constitution, which recognizes cultural leaders based on the customs of their people.
This official endorsement addresses recent public discussions surrounding the succession after the passing of King Oyo on August 27. President Yoweri Museveni is also expected to attend the coronation of King Nyabongo I, scheduled for September 29 at Karuziika Palace.
