Uganda Wildlife Authority Offers Free Park Entry for Domestic Tourism Boost

The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) has announced an exciting opportunity for Ugandans and East African residents to explore the nation’s rich wildlife reserves. From September 25th to September 27th, selected national parks will open their gates for free as part of the ‘Open Park Days’ initiative.

This special three-day event is designed to foster domestic tourism, encouraging citizens who may have never visited a national park to experience the wonders of Uganda’s natural attractions. UWA officials emphasized that experiencing tourism firsthand is crucial for understanding and appreciating the value of these protected areas.

Among the parks participating in this initiative are Murchison Falls, Queen Elizabeth, Lake Mburo, and Kidepo Valley. These locations are home to a diverse range of wildlife, offering visitors the chance to see elephants, lions, hippos, and numerous bird species in their natural habitats.

The ‘Open Park Days’ are strategically timed to coincide with the lead-up to World Tourism Day, aiming to build momentum for the sector beyond just foreign visitors. By providing free access, UWA hopes to transform residents into passionate ambassadors for Uganda’s tourism potential.

This initiative addresses a gap where communities living near national parks may experience challenges from wildlife, such as crop damage, without necessarily benefiting from or visiting the parks themselves. The UWA hopes this free access period will bridge that divide and foster a greater appreciation for conservation efforts.

Regular park entry fees will resume on September 28th, following the conclusion of the World Tourism Day celebrations. This is a prime chance for Ugandans to discover the incredible biodiversity and scenic beauty that their country has to offer.
