Veteran Musician Moses Matovu Dies After Attack in Kibuli

Kampala is mourning the loss of Moses Matovu, a legendary figure in Ugandan music and a cornerstone of the iconic Afrigo Band. Matovu, celebrated as the ‘saxophone king,’ died on Thursday morning at Kibuli Hospital at the age of 77.

His life was cut short after he was attacked by unidentified thugs in the Kibuli area. Police have confirmed that the Kabalagala police station has registered a case of suspected murder and is actively investigating the incident. “Our task team is currently at the scene conducting investigations to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident,” stated Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Rachel Kawala. Officers are working to identify and apprehend the perpetrators.

Initial reports suggest Matovu was en route to a mosque for morning prayers when the attack occurred. The motive behind the assault and the exact events leading up to it remain unclear as investigations continue.

Matovu was instrumental in the formation of Afrigo Band in 1975, a band that has since become one of Uganda’s most enduring and influential live music ensembles. His musical journey began in the 1960s with the Thunderbirds Band, followed by stints with the Police Band and the Cranes Band.

As a founding member, Matovu served Afrigo Band for decades in various capacities, including band leader, saxophonist, vocalist, and composer. His nearly six-decade career cemented his status as a pivotal artist in Uganda’s live band scene, playing a significant role in preserving the genre’s legacy for new generations.
