Busoga Leaders Outline Development Priorities Following Presidential Directive

Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja recently revealed that President Museveni has instructed ministers to craft detailed development blueprints for every region in Uganda, with a special focus on the Busoga sub-region. This directive comes at a time when statistics from the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) indicate that a significant portion of Busoga’s population, approximately 840,700 individuals, were living below the poverty line in the 2023/24 fiscal year.
During the 12th coronation anniversary of the Kyabazinga of Busoga, William Nadiope Gabula IV, held in Mayuge District, leaders and stakeholders articulated their development aspirations. They are calling for tangible benefits for every Ugandan, with an urgent need for initiatives that can lift Busoga out of its current economic challenges.
Key to these aspirations is the effective utilization of the region’s resources to combat poverty. Stakeholders suggest that enhanced efforts in sectors like agriculture, including the cultivation of cocoa, coffee, and palm oil, could significantly boost incomes. For instance, an initial investment of Shs1 million in cocoa farming is projected to yield returns as high as Shs17 million, according to a ministry survey.
Furthermore, youth and women’s groups are actively seeking opportunities in sectors such as piggery and poultry farming as a means to achieve economic independence. These grassroots initiatives aim to create sustainable livelihoods and contribute to the sub-region’s overall economic upliftment.
Busoga’s development agenda also includes fostering international cooperation, particularly with Chinese institutions, to drive advancements in agriculture, trade, education, and technology transfer. The goal is to transition Busoga towards a middle-class economy by 2030, creating more employment opportunities and improving the quality of life for its residents.
