Engineers: Guardians of Public Trust, Not Just Builders

The engineering profession in Uganda is at a crossroads, facing scrutiny over allegations of bribery, budget manipulation, and collusion. This situation compels a deeper examination of accountability within the field. While government bodies and law enforcement play a role, the responsibility for maintaining the profession’s integrity ultimately lies with engineers themselves and their professional institutions.

The Uganda Institution of Professional Engineers (UIPE) serves as a crucial platform for upholding standards, ethics, and professional development. With a significant increase in membership and revenue in recent years, UIPE’s role in ensuring accountability becomes even more vital. This accountability extends beyond financial management to encompass the ethical conduct of its members.

Professional integrity is not a reactive measure but a cultivated practice. Engineers must possess the competence, independence, and courage to speak out against unsafe designs, compromised standards, or unjustified project decisions. A strong professional institution should support its members while rigorously enforcing high standards of professionalism, ethics, and integrity.

This means actively investigating credible concerns, applying disciplinary measures when necessary, and collaborating with legal bodies when issues fall outside their jurisdiction. Every engineer, professional institution, regulator, employer, and stakeholder shares the responsibility of embedding accountability into professional excellence. By holding ourselves to high standards, we fortify the reputation and credibility of the entire engineering profession.
