Ugandan music legend Moses Matovu, aged 77, has died following an altercation at a residence in the Market B Zone of Kibuli, Makindye Division, Kampala. The incident, which occurred in the early hours of the morning before the Fajr prayer, has sent shockwaves through the music fraternity.
According to eyewitness accounts from neighbours in the densely populated shanty area, a familiar visitor arrived at the single room rented by a 26-year-old woman. The visitor, whose voice was recognised by one of the tenants, began banging on the door and demanding entry.
The neighbour who recognised the voice reportedly grew fearful, as previous visits by this individual were often associated with disturbance and violence. Tragically, these fears were realized when the confrontation escalated, leading to a fatal blow.
Sources indicate that Matovu, a celebrated figure in Ugandan music, sustained a fatal injury from a punch during the altercation. The assailant fled the scene immediately after the incident. However, police have confirmed that a suspect was apprehended on the following day and is currently in custody.
Details surrounding the motive for the late-night visit and the subsequent attack remain under investigation by the authorities. The community is mourning the loss of a national treasure whose contributions to music spanned decades.
