US-Uganda Ties Stronger Than Ever, Envoy Declares

The United States views its current relationship with Uganda as exceptionally strong and is looking to deepen this partnership. Mikael Cleverley, the US Embassy Chargé d’Affaires in Uganda, made these remarks during the US Embassy’s National Day celebration in Kampala.

Cleverley highlighted that the anniversary provided a moment to reflect on America’s history and its global partnerships, emphasizing the longstanding and robust ties with Uganda. He stated that both Washington and Kampala possess the political will to expand their engagement, and the US Embassy has been directed to explore new avenues for collaboration.

“The relationship between Uganda and the US is better than it has ever been,” Cleverley stated. “We have political will on both sides to do more together.” The focus is now on translating this political commitment into tangible economic and institutional cooperation, encouraging US companies to invest and expand their presence in Uganda.

Commercial diplomacy is a key priority for the embassy, with a goal to attract American businesses by showcasing Uganda’s investment opportunities. The US is particularly interested in investments that create local economic value and align with Uganda’s development priorities. This includes sectors like health, where existing partnerships, such as the health memorandum of understanding, are being deepened. Innovative companies like Boeing, Starlink, and Marriott are cited as examples of US businesses that can significantly benefit Uganda’s economy through improved connectivity, internet access, and tourism.

The embassy is actively working to help potential US investors understand the Ugandan market and mitigate investment risks. They are advocating for transparent and competitive market conditions to attract American businesses, who assess opportunities globally. Collaboration with Uganda’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and its diplomatic missions in Washington and New York is ongoing to promote bilateral trade and investment.

Cleverley noted that existing US companies in Uganda, such as Abbott providing diagnostic equipment, demonstrate the potential for further cooperation. Washington is eager to see more American companies explore opportunities in health, minerals, energy, and agriculture, sectors identified as crucial for Uganda’s growth strategy.
