Handwriting Expert Alleges Forgery in Bukomansimbi MP Election Petition

A critical turning point has been reached in the Bukomansimbi District Woman MP election petition, as a handwriting expert presented evidence alleging forgery. The expert, testifying on behalf of National Unity Platform (NUP) candidate Veronica Nanyondo, claimed that signatures on crucial Declaration of Results (DR) forms were falsified.

These forms are central to the petition filed by Ms. Nanyondo, who aims to challenge the victory of incumbent MP Ruth Katushabe. The Electoral Commission declared Ms. Katushabe the winner with a narrow margin of 206 votes following the January polls.

During proceedings overseen by Justice Rosette Comfort Kania, both legal teams agreed to rely on a single expert witness. This decision streamlined the case, allowing the judge to consider the evidence presented for a final determination.

Following the session, Ms. Nanyondo’s legal counsel, Haruna Nyonyintono, expressed optimism. “We have presented our witness who told court that signatures of my client’s agents on three Declaration of Results forms which the Electoral Commission based on to announce Ms. Katushabe as the winner were forged,” Mr. Nyonyintono stated. He added, “We expect Ms. Nanyondo to recover her victory and court declare her the winner.”

The case also saw testimony from Masaka High Court Deputy Registrar Roy Karungi, who clarified discrepancies in court record filing dates. She explained that apparent differences in registry stamps were likely administrative oversights, with documents filed on the same day despite differing stamps.

Justice Kania has adjourned the matter until November 5th, when she is expected to deliver her ruling on the petition.
