World Tourism Day Spotlights Mbale's Visitor Economy

Mbale is preparing to be the center of attention as it hosts this year’s World Tourism Day, an occasion anticipated to significantly uplift the visitor economy in the Bugisu sub-region.

The celebration, scheduled for September 27, is seen by local stakeholders as a prime opportunity to showcase and capitalize on Mbale’s unique attractions, including its rich cultural heritage, renowned coffee, and distinct local cuisine.

Saleh Naminya, a prominent coffee farmer and proprietor of Casa Uganda Safaris and Lodges, emphasizes the wide-reaching impact of tourism spending. He points out that a visitor’s experience, from breakfast onwards, supports a complex chain of local businesses, including farmers, transporters, and hospitality staff.

“How many farmers were on that plate of food you had this morning?” Naminya posed, illustrating how tourism revenue flows through various sectors of the local economy, extending far beyond the hotel itself.

The event is expected to draw visitors who will not only experience Mbale’s natural beauty and cultural offerings but also contribute directly to the livelihoods of many in the community. Local hotels are reportedly gearing up for an influx of guests, anticipating increased business.

This focus on Mbale aligns with broader efforts to promote regional tourism and encourage domestic travel, with initiatives like free entry to national parks also being launched to foster a greater appreciation for Uganda’s diverse attractions.
