Minister Kamuntu Commends Speaker Oboth for Elevating Parliament's Reputation

Minister of Internal Affairs, Prof. Ephraim Kamuntu, has expressed high praise for Speaker Jacob Marksons Oboth, noting a significant enhancement in the reputation of the 12th Parliament under his guidance. The commendation came during the Oak Jubilee celebrations of Mushanga Catholic Parish in the Archdiocese of Mbarara.
Prof. Kamuntu, who also serves as the Member of Parliament for Sheema South, recalled his professional interactions with Oboth, emphasizing his background as a State Attorney and his skills as a lawyer trained both in Uganda and the United States.
“He was a friend. He is a professionally trained lawyer, here and in the USA,” Kamuntu stated. He particularly remembered Oboth’s tenure as Chairperson of the Committee on Legal and Parliamentary Affairs during the 10th Parliament, where they collaborated on landmark legislation such as the Administration of Judiciary Bill and electoral reforms.
“He helped me a lot. We passed the Administration of Judiciary Bill. It was hard. We passed the electoral reforms bill. It was difficult, but if I didn’t have him, I would have failed as minister,” Kamuntu recounted.
The Minister also pointed to Oboth’s unique endorsement by the entire House of Bishops as a testament to his character and faith. Kamuntu credited the Speaker’s adept use of humor for de-escalating tense situations on the floor of Parliament, referring to him as an “asset” whose leadership garners global attention and the full confidence of the ruling NRM government.
Speaker Oboth, who represented Vice President Jessica Alupo at the event, thanked the community for their hospitality and highlighted the positive impact of the parish’s development projects. He also acknowledged the diligent work of the legislators from Sheema district.
In her delivered remarks, Vice President Alupo underscored the crucial role of religious institutions as partners in national development, particularly in education and healthcare, urging continued collaboration to achieve government aspirations for wealth creation and improved household incomes.
