Dr. Louis Mukwaya, Esteemed UVRI Scientist and Mosquito Researcher, Laid to Rest

Dr. Louis Godfrey Mukwaya, a distinguished scientist at the Uganda Virus Research Institute (UVRI), has died at the age of 87. Dr. Mukwaya was renowned for his extensive research on mosquitoes, a field so significant that a species, Stegomyia (Mukwaya) simpsoni, was named after him.

Joining UVRI in 1965 as its first Ugandan graduate, Dr. Mukwaya dedicated 61 years of his life to the institute, even after retiring in 1999 and continuing as a consultant. During his tenure, he served as acting director, playing a crucial role in preserving valuable scientific specimens during periods of national instability in the 1970s.

His research focused on understanding mosquito feeding behaviors, particularly their genetic basis, which laid the groundwork for modern approaches like mosquito gene editing. “The basis for the feeding behaviour is more genetic than environmental, hence now the idea of modifying mosquitoes,” noted Prof. Pontiano Kaleebu, the current UVRI Director.

Colleagues remember Dr. Mukwaya for his integrity, discipline, and ethical work practices. The institute is planning to establish archives for a museum dedicated to showcasing his contributions to science.

Family members recalled his deep love for his work and his equally profound generosity. His daughter, Josephine Birungi, noted his passion for mosquitoes, while his son, Anthony Makumbi, highlighted his commitment to helping underprivileged children pursue education. Dr. Mukwaya passed away peacefully due to complications from kidney failure.

Dr. Mukwaya was laid to rest in Semuto, Nakaseke District.
