State Minister for Local Government, Justine Nameere, has significantly streamlined her defense in the ongoing election petition against her win as Masaka City Woman MP. Appearing before Justice Bernard Namanya, Nameere’s legal team announced the withdrawal of five out of the initial seven witnesses.

The decision to drop the witnesses was communicated by Nameere’s lead counsel, Anthony Bazira. He explained to the court that the reduction in witnesses was a strategic move, particularly following the testimony of their primary witness, Minister Nameere herself.

Minister Nameere had opted to provide her testimony virtually, via Zoom, a development that appears to have influenced the court’s proceedings and the subsequent witness strategy. This allows the legal team to focus their efforts more effectively.

The petition was filed by Rose Nalubowa of the National Unity Platform (NUP), who is challenging the results of the election that declared Nameere the winner. The case has seen several procedural hearings as both parties prepare to present their arguments and evidence.

With the reduced witness list, the case is expected to proceed more efficiently. The court will now focus on the remaining evidence and testimonies to determine the validity of the election results for the Masaka City Woman MP seat.
