A significant moment for the Catholic Church in Uganda unfolded recently as the Rt Rev Bosco Bonaventure Gubazire was ordained and installed as the new Bishop of Kabale Diocese. This ceremony marks the formal transition of leadership, with Bishop Gubazire taking the helm from the Rt Rev Callistus Rubaramira, who had served the diocese for over two decades.

Bishop Gubazire’s appointment was made by Pope Leo XIV on July 15, 2026. His journey to this pivotal role has been marked by extensive academic and pastoral experience, spanning across Africa and Asia. Born in 1974, Gubazire’s educational path began in Kabale before leading him to study philosophy and theology. He later pursued advanced degrees, including a Doctorate in Philosophy from the University of San Carlos in the Philippines in 2020.

Since his ordination as a priest in 2003, Bishop Gubazire has held various significant positions. He has served as assistant parish priest in Mozambique, professor and dean of studies in Malawi, and coordinator and chaplain for the Friends of the Missionaries of Africa in the Philippines. His leadership roles also extended to being a rector of formation houses and a provincial council member for the Missionaries of Africa.

His extensive international experience and diverse pastoral responsibilities have prepared him for his new role as the shepherd of the Kabale Diocese. He now leads the faithful, continuing the work established by his predecessor.
