Hoima City authorities have initiated a forceful crackdown on the irregular allocation and management of stalls within Hoima Central Market. This operation, spearheaded by Resident City Commissioner Badru Mugabi, aims to reclaim government-owned market spaces that have allegedly been monopolized by local leaders and councillors.

The core issue involves accusations that these leaders secured stalls for themselves at the official rate of Shs60,000 per month, only to sublet them to vendors at inflated prices ranging from Shs100,000 to Shs150,000 monthly.

Authorities have commenced a fresh registration process for all vendors, compelling them to transact directly with the city council and bypassing any alleged middlemen. This move is intended to ensure transparency and fair pricing.

During the operation, 30 market stalls, reportedly locked and unused for approximately two years by individuals who had claimed ownership, were reopened and allocated to vendors. This action addresses complaints that some leaders were hoarding space without utilizing it.

The crackdown follows a directive from Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja, prompted by persistent complaints from vendors about exploitative practices. City officials emphasized that such unauthorized control of public facilities is unacceptable and detrimental to the intended beneficiaries.

Hoima City Deputy Town Clerk Conerius Jobile affirmed that the authorities are acting within legal frameworks, specifically citing the Local Government Market Act. He urged citizens to report any market-related irregularities to ensure timely intervention.

Local leaders, including the LC1 chairperson of Hoima Central Market, Moses Akugizibwe, have welcomed the operation, viewing it as a crucial step in safeguarding the interests of vulnerable vendors.
