A devastating incident occurred at Jehovah Jireh Junior Academy when a primary three pupil, identified as Promise Naturinda, lost her life after a section of a weak wall collapsed on her. The tragic event unfolded while students were engaged in washing clothes near the structure.
According to classmates who witnessed the collapse, the wall, which had a clothesline attached, could no longer withstand the strain and gave way suddenly. Naturinda was playing nearby when the wall fell directly on her.
In a desperate attempt to save her, her peers rushed her to a nearby health facility. Sadly, medical personnel confirmed that the young learner had already passed away from her injuries.
When journalists arrived at the scene, there was no presence of school administration or teaching staff, raising questions about the school’s emergency response protocols. Police later arrived to secure the site, retrieve the body, and transport it to Mulago City Mortuary for a post-mortem examination. Investigations into the exact cause of the structural failure are now underway.
This incident brings to the forefront the persistent concerns about the safety and structural integrity of school infrastructure in Uganda. The country has seen similar tragedies in the past, including fatal wall collapses at schools in Butaleja District and Centenary High School in March 2023, and a particularly deadly incident at Lohana High School in Kampala in 2019 that claimed six lives. These past events have consistently led to calls for stricter enforcement of building standards for educational institutions.
