Leaders at Abim All Saints Church have put aside their differences after a physical altercation between Reverend Canon Richard Ongom and Mr. Innocent Oyoo, the Local Council (LC2) chairperson of Waimer Ward, Abim Town Council.
The incident, which happened during a service on September 27, saw the two men engage in a fistfight after Mr. Oyoo attempted to address the congregation on security matters. Reverend Ongom reportedly denied Mr. Oyoo permission to speak, leading to a heated exchange that escalated physically.
The matter had initially been reported to the police, with both parties claiming assault. The Church of Uganda had issued a statement expressing regret and calling for an investigation into the breach of sanctity within the church.
However, exactly one week later, Bishop Simon Akol Aisu of the North Karamoja Diocese intervened, bringing the two men together for a reconciliation service at the same church. During the service, both Mr. Oyoo and Reverend Ongom expressed remorse for their actions.
“Beginning today, I ask you to forgive me. I pledge to work for the church and sacrifice for the church; I request you to forgive us for what happened,” Mr. Oyoo stated, apologizing for the embarrassment caused and committing to follow proper channels for future communications.
Reverend Ongom welcomed Mr. Oyoo’s apology with a hug in front of the congregation, symbolizing a fresh start. Bishop Aisu emphasized the crucial role of spiritual leaders in maintaining church unity and encouraged forgiveness and a renewed commitment to working together.
The reconciliation is seen as a significant step towards restoring harmony not only within the church but also within the wider Abim District community.
