A dramatic fistfight that halted a Sunday service at Abim All Saints Church has ended with a public reconciliation between the involved parties. Reverend Canon Richard Ongom and Innocent Oyoo, the Local Council II chairperson for Waimer Ward, embraced before their congregation on Sunday, October 4, marking a symbolic act of Christian redemption.
The dispute, which occurred the previous Sunday, September 27, began when Oyoo entered the church intending to address security matters, claiming he had authorization from local security leadership. However, Rev Canon Ongom challenged his presence, leading to a heated exchange that escalated into a physical confrontation.
Both individuals had initially reported the incident to the police. The Church of Uganda had also expressed regret, calling for a thorough investigation and emphasizing the sanctity of church spaces.
Under the guidance of the Rt Rev Simon Akol Aisu, Bishop of the Diocese of North Karamoja, the two leaders were encouraged to pursue forgiveness. Bishop Aisu stressed the crucial role of spiritual leaders in maintaining unity within the faith community.
During the reconciliation service, Oyoo offered a public apology to the Bishop, Rev Canon Ongom, his family, and the congregation for the embarrassment caused. He stated that while his intention was to share important security information, his method was inappropriate and pledged to use official channels in the future. Oyoo formally presented written apologies, a step he took at the request of his brother.
In a gesture signifying renewed unity, Rev Canon Ongom embraced Oyoo before the assembled worshippers. Local leaders have lauded the resolution, viewing it as a positive step for both the church and the wider Abim community, underscoring the principle that ‘unity is strength.’
