Msgr. Richard Kayondo, the Vicar General of Lugazi Diocese, has voiced serious concerns about the dwindling number of Christians attending church services. He described this trend as a demoralizing factor for priests and a worrying global phenomenon that is now impacting Uganda.
Speaking at a dedication mass for examination candidates at Namilyango College, Msgr. Kayondo noted the diminishing faith and its direct correlation with fewer people attending mass. He called upon believers to actively participate in church services to sustain the faith and support the clergy.
“Please go to church, push our faith forward, and keep the priests active,” Msgr. Kayondo implored. He also encouraged Christians to draw inspiration from guardian angels, advocating for purposeful living and offering support to those in need. The cleric reminded the congregation that God is a source of salvation during difficult times, emphasizing that “with the Lord, everything is possible.”
Furthermore, Msgr. Kayondo addressed the students, cautioning them against examination malpractice. He stressed that success gained through dishonest means is fleeting and urged them to uphold the academic standards of Namilyango College. During the same service, he confirmed 14 students into the Catholic faith, imploring them to remain steadfast in their spiritual journey and committed to the Church.
The headteacher of Namilyango College, Mr. Constantine Mpuuga, acknowledged the supportive role of parents and encouraged the candidates to remain focused on achieving their academic goals. The service highlighted the importance of faith, integrity, and community support.
