The Ggaba Early Childhood Development Centre, which became the scene of a tragic massacre in April, will be demolished and replaced with a new, modern building. This decision comes after the conviction of Christopher Okello Onyum, who was found guilty of murdering four toddlers at the center and subsequently sentenced to death by the High Court.

Pastor Stephen Ssentimba of Ggaba Community Church announced the redevelopment plans during a recent service. He expressed his gratitude for the financial support received from Watoto Church, which has been instrumental in aiding the community in the wake of the tragedy. The daycare has remained non-operational since the incident, functioning as a ghost town ahead of its planned relocation and rebuilding.

Onyum was sentenced to death on April 30, with Justice Alice Komuhangi Khaukha handing down the sentence for each of the four murder counts. However, it is important to note that executions in Uganda have been on a de facto moratorium since 1999. Onyum has since appealed both his conviction and the sentence, with his case pending before the Court of Appeal.

The rebuilding of the Ggaba daycare signifies a step towards healing and recovery for the community affected by the April massacre. The new facility is expected to provide a safe and nurturing environment for young children once operations resume. Further details on the construction timeline and the new facility’s design are anticipated.
