Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Thomas Tayebwa, has implored religious leaders in the Kigezi sub-region to leverage their moral authority to foster unity and tackle significant societal challenges. The appeal was made during a thanksgiving Mass for the newly installed Bishop of Kabale Diocese, Rt. Rev. Bonaventure Bosco Gubazire.

Tayebwa emphasized the critical role clergy play in condemning sectarianism and promoting peaceful coexistence among believers. His remarks come amid ongoing concerns about political exploitation of religious differences in the region, a sentiment he previously voiced in March 2025.

Beyond religious harmony, Tayebwa urged the leaders to spearhead efforts against poverty and malnutrition, noting the paradox of food insecurity in an agriculturally rich area. He pointed to poor feeding habits, the immediate sale of food for cash, and alcoholism as contributing factors to these challenges.

Finance Minister Henry Musasizi echoed these sentiments, urging the new bishop to integrate wealth creation into his pastoral mission and support initiatives aimed at boosting household incomes, aligning with the government’s poverty reduction agenda.

The new Bishop, Rt. Rev. Gubazire, stressed the importance of unity and collaboration among religious leaders, communities, and stakeholders for improving the welfare of the populace. Bishop Emeritus Callistus Rubaramira, who retired after 23 years, pledged his continued support to the diocese as it embarks on this new chapter under Gubazire’s leadership.

This transition marks a new era for the Kabale Diocese, established in 1966 and serving a wide geographical area. The installation of Bishop Gubazire, appointed by Pope Leo XIV, signifies a continuation of the diocese’s mission with a focus on community development and spiritual guidance.
