A devastating accident on Namirembe Road in Kampala on Monday morning resulted in the tragic deaths of three individuals and serious injuries to four others. The incident occurred around 9:30 AM near KK Building, involving a Toyota Drone vehicle.
The sequence of events began when the vehicle reportedly struck a pedestrian, who died at the scene. The vehicle then collided head-on with a tricycle (known locally as a ‘tukutuku’) and a Bajaj Boxer motorcycle before coming to rest against a Toyota Hiace.
Officials confirmed that four injured individuals were immediately transported to a local hospital for urgent medical care. Sadly, two of these individuals later succumbed to their injuries, bringing the total confirmed fatalities to three. The identities of the victims have not yet been released.
Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety spokesperson, Michael Kananura, stated that investigations are actively underway to determine the precise cause of the crash. This incident occurs amidst a broader crackdown on public transport vehicles deemed to be in a dangerous mechanical condition. The “Ganyegenya” operation, launched on August 24, 2026, is a 100-day enforcement initiative targeting commuter taxis and public service vehicles found to be operating with mechanical defects.
Uganda has seen a significant number of road accidents, with 2025 recording 26,044 crashes and 5,383 fatalities, averaging approximately 15 deaths daily.
