A TikTok content creator, identified as Aziz Nkata, 41, has been formally charged and remanded by the Buganda Road Chief Magistrate’s Court. The charges stem from allegations of unlawfully obtaining and disclosing personal data, as well as publishing fake news.
Nkata appeared in court and pleaded not guilty to all charges. The prosecution informed the court that investigations into the matter have been concluded. His attempt to apply for bail was unsuccessful, as his legal team could not produce valid practicing certificates, leading the court to decline the bail application.
The charges, which allegedly occurred in July 2026 across Kampala and Wakiso districts, involve two main offenses. The first charge pertains to the unlawful acquisition and dissemination of personal data, in violation of the Data Protection and Privacy Act. Prosecutors allege that Nkata, alongside accomplices still at large, used his TikTok account, @Mr.Accountability, to obtain and publish a photograph of an individual named Nathan Bwogi without his consent.
The second charge relates to the publication of fake news, contravening the Uganda Communications (Licensing) Regulations. The prosecution claims that Nkata, using the same TikTok account linked to an Airtel Uganda SIM card, broadcasted a story alleging that Nathan Bwogi had used firearms to evict people from their land. This specific claim has been stated as false by the prosecution.
Nkata has denied all accusations leveled against him. The court has set October 19 as the next date for the case to proceed, with Nkata remaining in custody.
