Uganda's Mombasa Consul General Arrested Over Shs490m Loss Allegations

The Inspectorate of Government (IG) has taken into custody Ambassador Herbert Kiguli, Uganda’s Consul General in Mombasa, Kenya. The arrest stems from allegations that Ambassador Kiguli caused a direct financial loss exceeding Shs494 million to the Ugandan government.
According to an official statement from the anti-graft authority, the 59-year-old diplomat is accused of financial impropriety amounting to Shs494,097,270. The IG has confirmed that Kiguli will be presented before the Anti-Corruption Court in Kololo, Kampala, to formally answer to the charges.
Ambassador Kiguli, who has a background in human resource management and extensive experience in public service, was appointed to lead the Mombasa mission in October 2024. His responsibilities included fostering economic, commercial, and cultural relations between Uganda and the Kenyan coastal region, a critical hub for Ugandan trade routes.
Specific details regarding the transactions that allegedly led to the financial loss are expected to be revealed when Ambassador Kiguli is formally charged in court. Further information is anticipated as the legal proceedings commence.
