Busoga Kingdom’s Tourism Minister, Hellen Namutamba, has warmly welcomed the Cabinet’s approval for the establishment of Iganga University as a public institution. This move signifies the revival of the former Busoga University, which had its license revoked in 2017.
The new Iganga University is set to receive a substantial investment of nearly Shs90 billion from the government. Plans indicate that the university will feature multiple campuses across Iganga, Kamuli, and Bugiri districts, with a specialized constituent college in Namasagali focusing on marine and fisheries studies.
Minister Namutamba highlighted that this development will significantly improve access to higher education for the youth in the Busoga region and surrounding areas. She commended the government’s commitment to expanding educational opportunities and fostering regional development.
Beyond educational advancements, Namutamba took the opportunity to emphasize the importance of peace, youth discipline, and the protection of vulnerable members of society, particularly in light of the nation’s 64th Independence Day celebrations. She urged young people to respect their elders and leaders, and all Ugandans to safeguard children and the elderly.
The minister also acknowledged the efforts of First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports, Janet Museveni, in promoting public universities nationwide. The formal establishment of Iganga University is pending the completion of legal frameworks by the Ministry of Education and Sports and subsequent parliamentary approval.
Namutamba further lauded the government’s focus on development, security, and health sectors, while also recognizing the role of cultural institutions in preserving heritage and fostering unity. She encouraged continued prayers for the nation and its leaders, urging citizens to remain dedicated to hard work and national progress.
