The critical need for improved accommodation for female students at Nyamitanga Secondary School in Mbarara has been highlighted by a successful fundraising drive spearheaded by Mufti Sheikh Shaban Ramadhan Mubaje. The event garnered over Shs54.5 million in cash pledges and contributions, marking a significant step towards the construction of a new Shs700 million girls’ dormitory.
The fundraising initiative saw a broad spectrum of the community come together, including Muslim leaders, government figures, politicians, business professionals, and parents, all contributing cash, materials, and promises of support.
Mufti Mubaje underscored the vital importance of investing in girls’ education, emphasizing it as a shared responsibility among parents, religious leaders, and the wider community. He referenced the Quran, urging attendees to give charitably from what they hold dear for the sake of Allah, and also invoked the teachings of Prophet Muhammad regarding the moral upbringing and support of daughters.
Demonstrating his commitment, Sheikh Mubaje announced a Shs10 million contribution from the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council, along with an additional Shs500,000 from his personal funds.
Haj Ismail Baguma Kyoma, the headteacher of Nyamitanga Secondary School, explained that the institution, one of the oldest Muslim-founded schools in the Ankole region, currently accommodates over 1,000 students. He stressed that the escalating student numbers, particularly among girls, necessitate urgent expansion of residential facilities to alleviate overcrowding and enhance the learning environment.
During his visit, Mufti Mubaje also toured a commercial complex project in Mbarara, comprising a mosque, district offices, and an income-generating venture. While commending the progress, he advised against relying on bank loans for such projects, advocating instead for community-based fundraising and donations to ensure sustainable financial growth for Muslim institutions.
This fundraising effort and the development of income-generating projects reflect a concerted push by Muslim leaders to bolster the financial independence and long-term sustainability of community services and educational initiatives.
