A comprehensive study reveals that 94% of learners in Uganda are in favor of the Competence-Based Curriculum (CBC). This high level of acceptance suggests that the pedagogical shift, focusing on practical skills and application of knowledge, is resonating well with students.

The findings, detailed in a report released by the Directorate of Basic and Secondary Education, surveyed learners across various educational levels. The curriculum, introduced to replace the previous content-based approach, aims to equip students with skills relevant to the modern job market and societal needs.

Despite the widespread positive reception, the report also points to critical areas needing improvement. A recurring concern raised by learners and educators alike is the insufficient availability of essential learning materials. This includes textbooks, laboratory equipment, and other resources necessary for effective hands-on learning, which is central to the CBC’s philosophy.

Officials acknowledge these resource gaps and have pledged to address them. The Ministry of Education and Sports is reportedly working on strategies to enhance the provision of learning materials to schools nationwide. The goal is to ensure that the implementation of the CBC is not hindered by a lack of necessary tools and infrastructure.

The positive feedback from learners is a strong indicator that the CBC is moving in the right direction. Continued efforts to bolster resources are crucial to fully realize the curriculum’s potential and ensure equitable access to quality education for all Ugandan students.
