The recently concluded Senior Six academic year saw the graduation of students who navigated Uganda’s revamped competence-based curriculum (CBC). One of these pioneer students, speaking anonymously, shared that the curriculum’s emphasis on practical skills and real-world application has been a significant improvement over previous educational models.

“The new curriculum didn’t just focus on theoretical knowledge; it pushed us to apply what we learned,” the student explained. “We engaged in projects, problem-solving activities, and presentations that mirrored challenges we are likely to face after school, whether in further education or directly in the job market.”

This shift towards a competence-based approach was intended to move away from rote memorization towards fostering critical thinking, creativity, and adaptability among students. The curriculum design aimed to produce graduates who are not only academically proficient but also possess the practical skills needed to thrive in a rapidly changing world.

While the implementation of any major educational reform can present challenges, the feedback from this pioneer student suggests that the core objectives of the CBC are being met, preparing young Ugandans for life beyond the classroom. This positive reception offers a promising outlook for the future of education in the country as more cohorts progress through the new system.
