Transport along the critical Busunju-Mityana Road has been brought to a standstill following torrential downpours that have submerged key sections in Ssekanyonyi, Mityana District. Rivers and streams have breached their banks, inundating the road and creating impassable conditions for motorists, pedestrians, and traders alike.
The persistent flooding has sparked widespread concern among residents who rely on this route for daily commutes, accessing essential services, and crucially, for transporting agricultural produce to market.
Locals lament that the road, despite being a recurring item in government budget plans, remains in a dilapidated state, exacerbating the impact of the current flooding. “This road has been appearing in the national budget, but years have passed without the necessary work being done,” stated Membe John, a Ssekanyonyi resident. He urged authorities to prioritize its rehabilitation, emphasizing the need for a permanent solution over temporary fixes.
The disruption poses a significant threat to farmers and traders, with fears of substantial financial losses due to delayed produce reaching Mityana town. “We need a lasting solution to the problem rather than waiting for repairs whenever there is an important event,” Membe added.
Joseph Luzige, the Mityana District LC5 chairperson, acknowledged the road falls under the Ministry of Works and Transport’s purview. However, he assured that the district is exploring all possible means to mitigate the immediate access issues while awaiting intervention from the national ministry.
Residents are collectively appealing for urgent action to address both the flooding and the road’s poor condition, seeking a reliable transport link between Ssekanyonyi and Mityana that can withstand adverse weather conditions and ensure the smooth flow of commerce.
