Joseph Kabila Takes Helm of New DR Congo Rebel Coalition

A new rebel coalition, the Front for the Refoundation of the Nation (FRN), has been announced, with former President Joseph Kabila named as its leader. The group declared its intention to coordinate “resistance forces” to end “tyranny” in the Democratic Republic of Congo, signaling a readiness to use force to achieve its objectives.

This marks the most direct indication of Kabila’s involvement in an armed movement since his sentencing in absentia for treason last year. The FRN was unveiled at a press conference held at Kabila’s residence in Goma, a city in eastern DR Congo currently under the control of the M23 rebel group. Sultani Makenga, a key figure in M23, has been appointed as one of Kabila’s four deputies within the new coalition.

Kabila’s emergence as the head of this coalition follows recent public statements where he criticized President Félix Tshisekedi’s administration. He accused the government of ignoring his proposals for peace in the east, mismanaging the economy, undermining constitutional rule, and failing to ensure security, while also alleging arbitrary arrests of political opponents.

Kabila, who governed DR Congo from 2001 to 2019, had previously denied any links to rebel groups like M23. This development occurs amidst ongoing instability in eastern DR Congo, where over 100 militia groups are active, fueled by ethnic tensions and competition for the region’s rich natural resources. The formation of the FRN adds another layer of complexity to the nation’s long-standing conflict, with President Tshisekedi recently suggesting that upcoming elections might be postponed due to the persistent violence.
