President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni recently held discussions with Mr. Mehamood Hosein, the founder and chairman of U.S.-based Hive Global Group. The meeting, held at State House Entebbe, focused on forging a partnership to advance Artificial Intelligence (AI) and digital transformation within Uganda.

The core objective of this potential collaboration is to position Uganda as the leading AI nation in Africa and to establish the continent as a significant global center for AI computing and intelligence services. President Museveni expressed enthusiasm for the venture, acknowledging the transformative potential of the AI industry and welcoming Mr. Hosein’s expertise.

Mr. Hosein, who also founded the Hosein Family Office, shared insights from his extensive experience in the technology sector, including his early work at EMC Corporation, which played a key role in developing the data-storage infrastructure that underpinned the information age. He highlighted that the world is now entering an “intelligence age” powered by AI infrastructure, which will be a major driver of global economic growth.

Plans were outlined for “HIVE Uganda” and “The Global AI Village.” This ambitious initiative aims to create a comprehensive ecosystem that includes advanced AI computing centers, dependable energy sources, research facilities, technology development, and international private investment. The vision is for Uganda to become a producer and exporter of AI-powered services, mirroring how nations export commodities like oil and minerals.

This proposed ecosystem aims to do more than just construct data centers. It seeks to cultivate a broader technological environment that empowers Uganda’s youth, attracts global tech companies, and fosters new industries. Such development could significantly boost economic growth through enhanced research, innovation, digital skills, and technology-based services. Mr. Hosein also stressed the importance of reliable and cost-effective energy for supporting large-scale AI computing, and indicated that the initiative would focus on mobilizing international private capital to ensure commercial sustainability without increasing Uganda’s national debt.
