The 7th UG Economic Forum has issued a strong call to action for Ugandan businesses and the government: ensure the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) translates into tangible economic benefits for its citizens.
Discussions on the forum’s second day emphasized transforming the expected influx of visitors into income for tour operators, hotels, transport providers, and small enterprises. The central theme, “Putting Money in People’s Pockets: Translating Economic Growth into Household Prosperity,” highlighted the need for practical strategies to ensure ordinary Ugandans benefit from the event.
Minister of State for Sports Peter Ogwang challenged attendees, asking, “Are you ready to seize the opportunity?” He encouraged Ugandans to establish businesses and position themselves to capitalize on the anticipated economic activity. Progress on renovating the Mandela National Stadium, Namboole, and the readiness of the Akii-Bua Olympic Stadium were also confirmed.
Panel discussions, including “Getting Them Here” and “Making It Worth Staying For,” delved into attracting tourists and enhancing their experience. The Uganda Tourism Board noted that tour operators are already selling travel packages, aiming to encourage visitors to explore beyond the tournament venues. However, a significant call was made for increased investment in international tourism promotion to attract more visitors and boost revenues.
Entrepreneurs highlighted the critical need for access to affordable financing to start or expand businesses. Furthermore, improving service quality in the tourism sector was identified as crucial, with current standards meeting expectations in only 41% of cases. Uganda Airlines is working on service improvements and regional fare affordability, while the Uganda Revenue Authority emphasized the connection between tax administration and household prosperity.
The forum underscored the necessity of coordinated efforts in tourism, finance, hospitality, and service quality to maximize and sustain the economic gains from AFCON 2027. Future discussions will focus on mineral development and various service sectors, including financial inclusion and technology.
