Butabika National Referral Mental Hospital has received a significant boost with the commissioning of a new sports arena, designed to significantly improve the rehabilitation and recovery process for its patients. The facility, supported by Watoto Church Ministries, includes a football pitch and a basketball court.

Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, the Minister of Health, highlighted the crucial role of physical activity in mental health treatment, stating that it forms an integral part of therapy. He expressed gratitude to Watoto Ministries for their contribution, emphasizing the importance of utilizing the new facility effectively.

Dr. Juliet Nakku, Director of Butabika Hospital, elaborated on the multifaceted benefits of the sports arena. She explained that patient management extends beyond medication and includes specialized rehabilitation to prepare individuals for reintegration into the community. The arena will enhance these rehabilitation efforts.

Furthermore, Dr. Nakku pointed out that exercise releases beneficial chemicals in the brain that can alleviate symptoms associated with mental health conditions such as depression and anxiety. The facility will also aid in preventing non-communicable diseases, including obesity, which can be exacerbated by the sedentary nature of some mental health illnesses and weight gain as a side effect of medication.

The sports arena is intended to be accessible not only to patients but also to the hospital staff and the surrounding community, fostering a holistic approach to well-being. Watoto Church Ministries, through its leader Mr. Julius Rwotlonyo, expressed that the facility aims to help individuals regain confidence, joy, and purpose.

This initiative underscores the belief that demonstrating compassion and service is a core tenet of faith, encouraging the church to actively engage with and support the community beyond its walls.
